Heart pine is the heartwood of the longleaf pine tree pinus palustris which is no longer harvested for commercial use and is now primarily available only as reclaimed lumber. Pine is an often overlooked flooring material due as it s a softer wood although heart pine is different from yellow or white pine. Is it truly antique. Incidentally the name southern yellow pine when referring to graded lumber includes only the four major species.
